speaker Karen Spring is a human rights defender,researcher, and, currently, the Honduras-based Coordinator for the HondurasSolidarity Network (HSN). Karen works to educate North Americans about US andCanadian foreign policy in Honduras and Central America, with particular emphasison the impacts privatization of public sector services and the effects ofmilitarization on human rights.
Karen has written several articles and reports about humanrights issues including Mining in impunity: Coerced negotiations and forceddisplacement by Aura Minerals in Western Honduras. Karen has testified beforeCanadian Parliamentary committees about human rights violations in Honduras andblogs at aquiabajo.com. Karen has been living in Honduras since July 2009. Shehas a BSc in international relations and human biology from the University ofToronto, a BSW from Lakehead University, and a Master of Public Health fromSimon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada.
We are a grassroots human rights organization dedicated tosupporting the social justice movements in Latin America and the Caribbean,along with educating North Americans about the realities of the Americas andthe role the US plays there. Founded in 1985, we are also known as the MarinInterfaith Task Force on the Americas (MITF).
