wc travel london 1Today kicks off an entire week of World Cafe in London! First, it’s a weird and wonderful piece of the city’s history – George Frideric Handel, who wrote Messiah, and Jimi Hendrix would have been next-door neighbors in London if they had been alive at the same time. Both of their former flats have been recreated and turned into a museum, and host Talia Schlanger takes the tour today. Plus, we’ll hear live performances from an indie rock band that’s about to break through, they’re called Sea Girls. That’s coming up, on this Sense of Place edition of World Cafe in London.

rhiannon giddens credit tanya rosen jonesSince her days with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Rhiannon Giddens has explored many rich collaborations – From writing a ballet to performing in a Celtic ensemble. Much of her profound work has been rooted in her love of African-American folk traditions, including her latest, called There Is No Other. She’s joined by jazz musician Francesco Turrisi, who is an expert on the influence of Arabic music on what is considered European art. Together, their new record illuminates music history. We’ll hear their fascinating conversation with host Talia Schlanger, plus a live performance. On this encore edition of the World Cafe.

Jeff Buckley GraceToday is the 25th anniversary of Jeff Buckley’s only studio album, Grace. The singular artist’s life and career were cut short when he tragically drowned at age 30, but his one record is a masterpiece. We’ll revisit live performances from his visit to the World Cafe in 1994. And we’ll hear two very rare Jeff Buckley tracks that are being released officially in the U.S. for the very first time in a special legacy collection. Host Talia Schlanger celebrates the anniversary of Grace, on the next World Cafe.

gabrielabarbieri cagetheelephantSince their 2008 debut record, which included the hit song “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked,” Cage the Elephant has become one of the biggest bands in rock, not to mention a cannot-miss live show. Leading up to their latest album, Social Cues, the band faced some trying events – Lead singer Matt Shultz’s divorce, as well as the passing of a few friends. Matt and his brother, guitarist Brad Shultz, join host Stephen Kallao today to talk about the music that came out of that difficult period, and Cage the Elephant perform live in the studio. On an encore edition of the World Cafe.
