IMG 7417At the start of the 2022/23 school year, 3rd grade students at Brooks Elementary began a 3 year, multi disciplinary project around Native Plants and Pollinators. Students began by researching local pollinators and the native plants they favored, giving presentations to local experts. After measuring and mapping previously barren planters in front of their classrooms, students planted, mulched and landscaped the planters according to their designs thanks to funding from Sonoma Water Agency and School Garden Network. Now in 4th grade, the students tended to the gardens as they watched them bloom- weeding, mulching, trimming and adding final touches such as pathways, rock borders and butterfly puddling stations. During garden classes, students also practiced scientific sketching in their nature journals. Returning this year as 5th graders, students had the opportunity to work with a visiting muralist, Janet Self, to create a mural on a wall next to the garden depicting the plants and animals that inhabit the garden. Each of our 170 5th grade students participated in the painting over a 2 week span!
