The song catapulted Michael to success in the U.S. and added to his well-established fame back home in the U.K. Now, he's back with a third album, called Kiwanuka. On today's encore edition of the World Cafe, we'll hear about Michael's journey to find his voice and what it was like growing up in England as the son of Ugandan parents. In the last five years, Thao Nguyen married her girlfriend and also made a trip to Vietnam with her mom, who hadn’t been back since escaping the war in 1973. Both of these things changed her life – And they influenced the songs on Temple, Thao’s latest album with her band The Get Down Stay Down. On June 19, 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas, one of the most remote slave states, learned that they were free. Today, Juneteenth, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, and World Cafe celebrates the holiday with a playlist of music rooted in African American history – We’ll hear inspirational songs, like Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” and thought-provoking tracks, like J.S. Ondara’s “American Dream.” Plus, an interview and performance from Gary Clark Jr. recorded last year upon the release of his latest album, This Land. But over the years, her solo project has grown, with her latest record, Heavy Light, featuring 20 musicians in the studio at once.
