Located a few miles off Highway 12, near the small town of Glen Ellen, Jack London State Historic Park is a memorial to writer and adventurer Jack London. Here's how he described the spot: “...there are great redwoods on it...also there are great firs, tanbark oaks, live oaks, white oaks, black oaks, madrone and manzanita galore. There are canyons, several streams of water, many springs...I have been riding all over these hills, looking for just such a place, and I must say that I have never seen anything like it.”
TRAILS TO TAKE:
Easy: Don't miss the 1.5 mile pilgrimage from Happy Walls Park Center and Museum to Jack London’s gravesite and to the Wolf House ruins.
Strenuous: Looking for a harder hike? Find the trail from State Park up Sonoma Mountain HERE.
DIRECTIONS:
From Santa Rosa head east, from Sonoma head north on Highway 12. Take the signed turnoff (Arnold Drive) a mile to the hamlet of Glen Ellen. Turn right on Jack London Ranch Road and proceed 1.2 miles to the state park.

An urban oasis, the Santa Rosa Creek/Prince Memorial Greenway Trail runs west along Santa Rosa Creek from downtown Santa Rosa to Fulton Road. A lovely meandering creek, whispering shade trees, migratory birds calling among the rushes, what could be better! The trail is paved from downtown to Fulton Road at the western edge of Santa Rosa. It turns to gravel as it crosses the laguna from Fulton to Willowside.
TRAILS TO TAKE:
Easy: Start in downtown Santa Rosa at Gateway Park and take a short public art walk along the Prince Memorial Greenway Trail, appreciating mosaics, murals, and statues done by local artists and schoolchildren.
Moderate-Strenuous: Hardier walkers and bikers should know that the Greenway Trail connects to the Joe Rodota and West County Bike Trails which means you can walk or ride trail-to-trail for 20 miles from Santa Rosa to the Russian River town of Forestville. No cars, all fun!
DIRECTIONS: Take 101 to the Downtown Santa Rosa Exit (3rd Street). Go right on 3rd and turn left of A Street. The downtown trail entrance is at Gateway Park at 1st and A Street.

Shollenberger Park in southeastern Petaluma is a 16-acre wetland bordered by Adobe Creek and the Petaluma River. Level paths—some paved, some gravel—wind among diked ponds, ample marshlands and open fields. This is a birders' paradise, so bring binoculars, a camera, and this handy birding list.
THE TRAIL TO TAKE:
Easy: The park features an easy and flat two-mile circular trail and a one-mile trail through Alman Marsh to the Petaluma Marina.
DIRECTIONS: To reach Shollenberger Park from Hwy 101, go east on Lakeville Hwy. (Hwy.116 East) one mile to South McDowell Extension. Turn right (south) and proceed about ¼ mile to the far side of the U. S. Postal Service Buildings. Turn right there at a tiny lane marked with a simple street sign, "City Park." This turn-off is at the foot of Cader Lane. Fifty yards down the primitive lane is a paved parking lot. The lane continues as a trail leading up onto the loop trail on the main dike.
