The current exhibition at Sebastopol Center for the Arts is called The Beauty of Purpose: A Functional Ceramics Show. I love that title, The Beauty of Purpose, it makes me think of how it feels to hold a well-made ceramic pitcher; with just the right weight, balance, appealing shape and glazing. Over 75 pieces are on view in the gallery, and were selected with the expert eye of Cheryl Costantini from the legendary Nichibei Potters. Each of the handmade ceramic artworks shows excellence in technique, including innovative and traditional explorations of clay, glazing, and textures, as well as clay bodies, such as fine porcelain and chunky stoneware, and firing methods including raku and high-fire.
Go see the show to appreciate the beauty of how the pieces were constructed and how well they address their intended purpose.
The Beauty of Purpose remains on view through March 31st
Sebastopol Center for the Arts is located at 282 South High St. in Sebastopol.
