thumbnail Arthur Monroe The current exhibition at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is Arthur Monroe: A Tow to Carry.

This is a retrospective show of work by the late Oakland-based artist, Arthur Monroe. The more than 25 works that are featured are drawn from a seven decade career that spanned from 1958 to 2011. Monroe’s colorful canvases reflect his ability to traverse within several of the major mid-century cultural movements of the time, including the New York School of Abstract Expressionism; the literary scene of New York’s East Village; and the modern Jazz and Beat circle in New York and eventually the San Francisco Bay Area.

After serving in the Korean War, Monroe gravitated to San Francisco’s North Beach district, joining the Beat Generation of musicians, poets, and painters that gathered there. In the 1970s, Monroe set up a live/workspace at the Oakland Cannery.

Arthur Monroe continues through September 8th at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art on Broadway in Sonoma.
