Meet another of this year's Red Cross Real Heroes. Laura Tietz is being recognized with their environmental award, but it could just as easily have been for being a good neighbor.
As she became educated about the individual items that posed potential fire hazards in "wild" forest lands, Fire Free Fitch founder Laura Teitz learned that "ladder fuels," such as those shown burning here, are both commonplace, and fairly easy to deal with.
Some types of trees and plants can be cut back to safe dimensions, but there are others, Tietz adds, that just naturally pose risks that are very difficult to mitigate.
Most of the fire hazards on Fitch Mountain--and most other places--are natural occurrences. But there are others, explains Tietz, that homeowners create themselves.
