The American Philharmonic looks and sounds like a traditional orchestra, but their approach to making music together is radically different.
Most modern orchestras still operate with a traditonal European model, with a small management group that does all of the decision-making, including hiring the musicans, who, in that system, are little more than paid workers. By constrast, explains American Philharmonic Music Director Gabriel Sakakeeny, this community orchestra is about collectively creating beautiful music--and very little else.
When the orchestra left the sponsorship of the Cotati Recreation and Parks Department, they needed a new name. Choosing American Philharmonic, says Sakakeeny, was a way of quietly affirming some of their core organizational principles.
