It was Zara McDonald's own face to face meeting with a full-sized adult male in the Marin Headlands that fueled her passion for working with the big cats of the world. She was out running above Sausalito near dusk, she recalls, when she had that life-changing encounter, that later led her to her current work on behalf of the world's larger felines.

One of the keys to prserving the remaining wild car populations, McDonald says, is creating safe corridors that allow them to move between areas of habitat that have not been compromised by urban expansion, allowing the creatures to maintain an approximation of their natural range. For humans who may live nearby, she offers these tips on how to keep mountain lions from coming too close.
