The world's base unit to measure weight, the kilogram was the last of the SI units still defined, not by a universal constant, but by a physical artifact – a man-made cylinder located at the International Bureau of Weights and Measurements in France. The program recounts how a necessary update to the standard resigned this object to history.

In the late 1960s, Richard Estes and other photorealists – including John Baede, Ralph Goings and Chuck Close - began to capture the essence of photographs on canvas. The documentary explores Estes' iconic paintings of everyday city scenes, such as 1968's ''Telephone Booth," and examines the painter's techniques and inspirations.
