Sonoma County Library will join libraries, schools and bookstores across the country to observe Banned Books Week from Sunday, October 5, through Saturday, October 11, with library displays, book lists, classroom presentations and more. This year’s national theme is “Censorship is so 1984. Read For Your Rights.”
First launched in the 1980s, Banned Books Week unites the book community in defense of the freedom to read. By drawing attention to nationwide efforts to remove or restrict access to books, the week highlights the harms of censorship and affirms every individual’s right to explore diverse ideas
On October 11, at 7:30, at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, Noel Yates, Diane Beyer, David Rosen and Dan Fein will present their version of a tribute to the late great Tom Lehrer. Before he passed, Lehrer published a blanket waiver stating that he was abandoning any rights to his music to encourage future performers to give his music new life and reinterpret his work without fear of legal action. Monte Rio Rec & Park District's Nick Thayer put in motion the first ever Monte Rio Transhumance Festival which brought over 300 goats to work on reducing fire fuels on the property. The process involved moving over 40 of them across the Monte Rio Bridge. A partnership with the Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District, Wild Oat Hollow, and Chasin Goat Grazing provided the service at no cost to the community - along with an exciting day for all who came to watch the event, including the students from Monte Rio School.
