The polls are now closed and the Sonoma County Elections Divisions has published initial results for the Nov. 4 special election.

Proposition 50 is passing, by a long shot, with 75% of the vote so far.

In Petaluma, a parcel tax for the Petaluma Joint Union High School District, Measure I, doesn't have enough votes to pass right now, as it needs 2/3 or 67% of the vote. Election night initial results, with 60% of precincts reporting, has the 'yes' vote at 61% to 40% 'no' vote.

The Petaluma Joint Union High School District Educational Excellence Measure asked Petaluma voters if they agree to add $129 to their annual property tax bills "to provide locally controlled funding for local junior high and high schools that cannot be taken away by the state to attract and retain excellent teachers; enhance math, science, engineering, technology, writing programs; maintain smaller class sizes; and prepare students for college and/or careers."

It's designed to provide Petaluma public junior high and high schools just over $3 million dollars a year in extra funding over the next 8 years. Seniors are exempted, none of the money can go towards administrators' salaries, and it requires an independent citizen oversight mechanism.

But remember, we won't know decisive tallies for at least a few days as Sonoma County's election division continues to count ballots.

In Timber Cover, as of 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, with 100% precincts reporting, Jess Weber, John Rea and John Gray are in the lead for district director seats on the Timber Cove County Water District. But vote tallies will certainly change as more ballots are processed over the coming days.
