New California laws going into effect this year ban many of the most toxic chemicals from personal products.

Makeup and bath products will no longer be allowed to contain formaldehyde or polyfluoroalkyl substances… also known as: PFAs or “forever chemicals”.

Janet Nudelman is with Breast Cancer Prevention Partners.

She says this is a big win for consumers, but also says there are more than 10,000 chemicals in personal care products.

"We can’t go after these chemicals one by one as a state and as consumers we literally can’t shop our way out of the problem," Nudelman said. "We deserve to have a government that protects us.”

Nudelman says cosmetics don’t have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration before they go on the market… like drugs do.

The FDA says cosmetic companies are responsible for selling safe products and keeping records.

Nudelman says Congress should pass a law requiring FDA approval.
