One driver died and nine other people were injured in a chain-reaction crash at a Santa Rosa intersection on Thursday afternoon,

Officials say the crash happened about 11:50 a.m., when a dump truck plowed into a line of 11 cars waiting at a red light on Highway 12 at Fulton Road.

A pickup truck was on fire when firefighters arrived, and its driver was dead, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department. The driver's name has not been released.

Several other vehicles were badly damaged and a total of nine people were hospitalized -- three of them with major injuries, fire officials say.

Westbound Highway 12 at Stony Point Road through Fulton Road was closed for more than four hours after the crash.

For several more hours, police are expected to be on the scene of a fatal traffic crash Thursday on westbound Highway 12 in Santa Rosa. 

Just before noon, calls came into 9-1-1 reporting a multi-vehicle crash involving a 10-wheeler semi truck. At least one person is confirmed dead, according to California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident information webpage.  

Santa Rosa Police sent out an alert at 1:02 pm that westbound Highway 12 had been closed between Stony Point Road and Fulton Road.

According to Santa Rosa Fire and the CHP, crews are at scene scene of a multi-vehicle accident on Westbound Hwy 12. As of about 1:30 pm, westbound Hwy 12 is closed at Stony Point Road. Police say vehicles stopped between the crash, which is just east of Fulton Road and Stony Point Road, are being turned around or moved off the freeway through a break in the fence Santa Rosa Fire has created. CHP and Santa Rosa PD say they are assisting with the removal and redirection of vehicles stopped in traffic, and that there is no estimate for when westbound Highway 12 will be reopened between Stony Point Road and Fulton Road.
