The new year means a stack of new laws taking effect in California. One policy will make our state the first in the nation to offer health insurance to all undocumented adults...as long as they don’t they don’t earn too much to qualify.

Starting in January, undocumented immigrants ages 26 to 49 will be eligible for comprehensive health insurance under Medi-Cal.

That’s the state’s health insurance program for low-income people.

Undocumented individuals who earn around $20,000 dollars or less a year are eligible.

Immigrant rights advocates have worked for decades to expand Medi-Cal to the undocumented community.

In 2016, the state allowed undocumented children to enroll in Medi-Cal.

It’s slowly expanded the program to adults since. This is the last phase in the process and the largest group.

There will be about 500,000 undocumented folks who will make too much money to qualify. But officials say they’re working on a solution for those people through Covered California.
