Sonoma County officials and utility Pacific Gas & Electric are in a $6 million standoff.

Earlier this year, PG&E demanded the return of $6.2 million dollars it paid the county in 2019 to cover part of the company's property tax.

Last week the county board of supervisors formally responded, telling the utility to take a hike, or take them to court.

KRCB News filed a California Public Records Act request to see related documents, and in a refund claim form, PG&E alleges the county assessed its property tax at a higher rate than it charged others.

According to the state assessor's office, PG&E owns property and improvements worth more than $875 million in Sonoma County.

The county billed PG&E more than $16 million for property taxes in the 2018 tax year, which the company paid in full.

The county's denial of the claim states the board of supervisors rejected it. It does not directly address PG&E's contention that it was billed incorrectly.

The utility did not respond to a request for more information.
