In his first State of the State address, Governor Gavin Newsom differentiated himself from his predecessor Jerry Brown by offering a different vision of the the state's high speed rail project and Delta water tunnels. But he continued Governor Brown's concern for the homeless, affordable housing and better health care for all Californians.
Newsom reiterated his approach to immigration, explaining in greater detail his plan to pull National Guard units from the southern border.
And he expressed concern for the state's aging population, inviting former first lady of California, Maria Shriver, to contribute to the state's focus on Alzheimer's disease, which her father Sargent Shriver had suffered from.
