This is not an outing that has been in the planning stages for a long time, explains Climbers for Peace co-founder Fred Ptucha. He says the idea arose not quite two years ago,  when he joined some Ukrainian climbers, with whom he had just ascended Russia’s Mt. Elbrus, for a gathering of the International Climbing Association in Iran.
