Demographic diversity is helpful among the elected members of local school boards, says Laura Gonzales, a second-term trustee for Santa Rosa City Schools. But she places an even higher value on cultural sensitivity.

Latino candidates must reach outside of their own community to be successful, observes Gonzales, because even though that population is rapidly growing in Sonoma County, only a minority of them are eligible to vote.
