WorldCafe Primary Red cmykThere are a lot of heartbreak albums out there, but few handle the subject with as much nuance as Courtney Marie Andrews’ new record. It’s called Old Flowers, and it’s a reflection on the Phoenix-born singer-songwriter’s nine-year relationship that ended. But a heartbreak album wasn’t her intention – She joins host Raina Douris today and explains how the connection between all of the songs only revealed itself to her over time. And Courtney performs some of the new music, live. That’s coming up, on the next World Cafe.

WorldCafe Primary Red cmykIt's Friday, and World Cafe's “Sense of Place: Los Angeles” series continues. First, we visit the oldest street in Los Angeles, Olvera Street – It’s home to a bustling Mexican marketplace and a tightknit community, where Grammy-winning band La Santa Cecilia grew up. Today, frontwoman La Marisoul shows host Raina Douris around Olvera Street, including the shop her family has operated for generations. Then, KCSN’s Byron Gonzalez shares a playlist of his favorite L.A.-based Latin Alternative artists. On the next World Cafe.

WorldCafe Primary Red cmykToday, it’s all cover songs on the World Cafe! For a full two hours, we’ll dig into the different ways musicians conceptualize the same idea…Like Yola, whose Elton John cover sticks close to the original. And Scissor Sisters’ cover of Pink Floyd, which gets about as far away from the original as one could imagine. Tune in to today’s all covers show – and after – maybe you’ll listen to some of your old favorites in a new way. That’s coming up, on the next World Cafe.

We revisit that session again, on the next World Cafe.
