michael mcdonald 0ae7Michael McDonald released two timely singles this year – His covers of “What the World Needs Now” and “What’s Going On” came out early in 2020 before turmoil and uncertainty took hold of the United States. Today, we’ll learn about the unplanned yet appropriate timing, and McDonald performs both classic songs live. Plus, he reflects on his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame this year with The Doobie Brothers, and he’ll tell the fascinating story of writing.

kathleenedwardscrop wideKathleen Edwards’ new album, Total Freedom, marks her return to music after eight years. Back in 2012, she had decided to quit the business altogether and opened a coffee shop, the aptly named Quitters Coffee. Since then, she’s been waking up at the crack of dawn to work in her Ontario cafe - And it took an unexpected phone call from Nashville to disrupt her new life and bring her back to music. We’ll hear that story today, and Kathleen performs songs from the new record, live. On the next World Cafe with host Raina Douris.

ChristineOver the last few years, Christine and the Queens has emerged as a wildly unique performer – The French singer-songwriter is able to express complex emotions through her avant-garde music, as well as through dance. Her latest project is the EP and short film, La Vita Nuova, which was born out of a very difficult year that included the loss of her mother. In a conversation with host Raina Douris today, we’ll hear about Chris’ creative driver – building worlds and then tearing them apart – plus a live performance recorded in Paris. That’s coming up, on this encore edition of the World Cafe.

Hazel engAfter hearing the debut album from Hazel English, you might be surprised to learn what inspired it.  At one point, she was studying to be a sci-fi writer, and that has worked its way into her first album. More obvious is the influence of ‘60s psychedelia and Motown. On the next World Cafe, she talks about bringing those disparate influences together and discusses why she loves songwriting.
