Shirlee Zane Continues Mental Health Activism, Sponsors Film on Suicide July 11

Sonoma County Supervisor Shirlee Zane is introducing a documentary called "The S Word" on Wednesday July 11 at 6 p.m.

in the Supervisors Chambers in Santa Rosa. The film follows a young woman who survived a suicide attempt and travels around the U.S. meeting other survivors and documenting their stories. It includes statistics meant to shock audiences out of their complacency about this growing problem.

Zane has devoted much of the past seven years to speaking out about suicide since her husband took his own life in 2011. Because of her efforts, Kaiser has shortened wait times to see mental health professionals, and has tried to address shortcomings in providing mental health care.

She spoke with KRCB News Director Steve Mencher about why she is passionate on the issue of suicide and how she began speaking out about it at her husband's funeral.

Information on the screening (which may be sold out by the time you read this) is available here.  You can also call Supervisor Zane's office at 707-565-3756

If you or someone you know need immediate help or are considering suicide, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at1-800-273-TALK (8255).
