Big Read Poetry for Grades 6-12
Help your students discover the intellectual and emotional satisfactions of reading one of our country’s finest poets. Emily Dickinson, 1830-86, was an independent thinker who loved the natural world and chose a life wildly different from most women in the 19th century. Her compressed poems on wide-ranging subjects make for rewarding explorations of U.S. history and culture, as well as literature.
This workshop will include experiential exercises focusing on three poems the illustrate Dickinson’s key poetic themes. Each participating teacher will receive a copy of the Pocket Emily Dickinson published by Shambhala Publications, along with NEA Big Read reader’s guide, teacher’s guide, and audio guide with a selection of Emily Dickinson poems read by contemporary poets.
Workshop leader Gwynn O’Gara is the author of three books of poetry. She has taught with California Poets in the Schools for over 20 years and has coached high school students competing in Poetry Out Loud for the last six years. She served as Sonoma County’s Poet Laureate from 2010 to 2012.

Big Read Poetry for Grades K-5
The big idea for the Big Read Poetry is to have students understand that poetry is a powerful art form and that it is a worthwhile endeavor to study the life and poetry of America’s most prolific and talented poets.
In this Big Read training, teachers will work with three poems by Emily Dickinson, writing down their initial thoughts of what is being expressed in the poems and discussing how to get students engaged is a similar process. Participants will have collaborative discussions about the poetry, watch an excerpt of film showcasing classroom instruction, see a student-made alphabet book about Dickinson’s life, and receive a list of books that will help teach students during the Big Read. Aligning instruction with the Common Core Standards will also be addressed.
