What is The Big Read, Sonoma County?
The Big Read, Sonoma County is funded in part by The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with Arts Midwest designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. Every year KRCB North Bay Public Media and the Sonoma County Library select a book from the list provided by the National Endowment for the Arts for our local Big Read. In Sonoma County the traditional month for Big Read is March.
In addition to theatrical events, library and community-sponsored reading groups, Big Read, Sonoma County features a variety of programs designed to appeal to as broad a population as possible, with a particular focus on what the NEA calls "reluctant readers." What makes Big Read, Sonoma County so unique is that the community participates in designing many of the events and programs that occur in the month of March. Funding is made available (through a competitive grant process) to help defray any costs in the planning and delivery of this projects.
In March, 2013 the Big Read, Sonoma County book selection is the poetry of Emily Dickinson. We have already located an actress to perform "The Belle of Amherst" who has also written a book about Emily Dickinson's life that will be featured at Copperfield's Book Stores. The Sonoma County Office of Education will be offering special classes for teachers (all grade levels) who want to share the works of Emily Dickinson to their students in ways that stimulate their interest and help cultivate a love of poetry. Watch this website as well as our Facebook page for more information as it becomes available.
Right now KRCB North Bay Public Media is accepting applications from the community for events during March 2013 that will engage the public in the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Contact Cheryl Scholar at 707.584.2005 for more info or go to the "forms" section on the KRCB Big Read Sonoma County website. Applications will be received until December 1, 2012; awardees will be notified by December 15, 2012 for events that will be held in March 2013.
