Remember Big Read Sonoma County 2010? Hundreds of Sonoma County residents of all ages read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer during the month of April and participated in community events ranging from special park programs to a ballet, reading to a dog in the local library, and riding a raft on the Petaluma River--to name just a few of the choices offered to celebrate this literary classic. We'll be taking a year off, but in 2012 KRCB plans on bringing back Big Read Sonoma County with a new book also selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as an example of great American literature: Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. If you want to propose events in your community related to the themes in Bless Me, Ultima (or other works by the author), let me know. Watch the interview with Rudolfo Anaya in this video made by the NEA - it will make you want to read the book!

Outer Voices and our Student Editorial Board have dedicated this podcast to Haiti. The recent earthquake there has been a reason for this small Caribbean nation to remain in the headlines, and to have rock concerts dedicated to "saving" it. But to begin to understand this country, we go to its margins, geographically and socially.
First we travel to the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic to unveil some of the sad truths of inequalities between neighbors. Next: Haiti is a country best known for its poverty as well as for voodoo - but what do we really understand about why Haiti struggles economically? And is voodoo really black magic sorcery? National Geographic Explorer Wade Davis explains. And finally, in our final touching story we meet a gay voodoo priest: he talks about his life and the empowerment that voodoo gives to him.

In this podcast, Outer Voices and our Student Advisory Board hear about what happens when a mother dies in childbirth, to the children and to the community, and examine why the rates of maternal mortality are on the rise in parts of the world.
We travel to Nigeria, where one woman is saved by a rare blood transfusion; to India, where the daughters of a mother who died in childbirth provide deep insight into the way forward; and then finally, we go back to Nigeria, where one woman's determination is creating new hope for children whose mothers have died.
