A long-awaited cleanup project along the banks of the Petaluma River got started last Thursday, as a crane brought in by the Environmental Protection Agency began clearing away some of the debris that has accumulated on a harl sunken barge not far downstream from downtown Petaluma.

Solomon Questions Opponent’s “Self-Focused Response” to Redistricting Scenario
Congressional candidate Norman Solomon released the following statement Saturday:
Political leaders should be ready, willing and able to clearly distinguish between personal career interest and the public interest.
While I’m confident that I would be successful in the proposed new congressional district stretching from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border -- and I would be proud to represent the entire North Coast -- the point of assessing the scenario’s boundaries should not be whether they might advance an individual’s political career. That’s why it was disturbing to see Jared Huffman’s self-focused response to the first remapping of the congressional district.
The overarching significance of the vitally important redistricting is not about any politician’s political calculus -- it is, or should be, about what would best serve the public.
Is it really in the best interests of the people of Marin County to be in a separate district from most Sonoma County residents while being grouped with a county on the Oregon border?
Is it really in the best interests of the people of Sonoma County for the congressional representation of their county to be split?
At this crucial moment, those are the kinds of tough questions that should be asked and answered.
On Friday, when the redrawn district map was released, I responded quickly with this statement: “The integrity of the North Bay should be preserved in the new congressional district. This is a region with common interests and shared terrain. For a long time our communities and concerns have flowed together. The new district should allow for full representation of those communities and concerns.”
