ArtthesourceResourceful artists scramble to salvage their weekend

One hundred and fifty-three professional fine artists will open their studios this weekend and the weather is wreaking havoc! This is a major selling opportunity, and these artists have been producing work and preparing their studios since December for the two-weekend event. Art at the Source has a record number of artists participating this year, many pinning their hopes on reports that the economy has turned a corner and is improving modestly. Those that are most vulnerable are the “guest artists” (those artists being hosted in another artists’ studio) who have work on paper –  the watercolor, photography, printmaking. Many of them had planned to display their work outdoors under shade canopies, but the prediction for more wet weather  has them scrambling for shelter, paved parking for their guests and alternative display techniques.

Citizen volunteers are important partners in the delivery of local government services and quality of life in the community. They always have been and always will be. Government simply can’t do it all and should not.  These partnerships are needed more than ever, especially in these difficult times as we have all experienced recession and economic reset, as City leaders work to redefine and prioritize spending for core City services.  In management terminology there is a concept called “co-production.” It’s a modern term that simply describes the activity of an engaged citizenry involved in the delivery of services to the community and themselves; it’s a useful concept for tackling today’s challenges for sustaining the vitality and quality of life in our community.  As a reminder, please recall that communities formed to solve problems for the greater good when people joined together to accomplish things greater than they could as individuals such as organizing for public safety, water and sewer systems, paved streets and the like.  This is an important principle to remember about communities despite the complexities of our larger City.

Today, people are attracted to quality of life of a community but need also to understand that the community, which is the heart and soul of the geographic location, is only renewed and sustained by active involvement of its citizens.  People in the larger Santa Rosa community know this and for this reason, the City will continue to seek even more citizen volunteers and partners in “co-production” of services to the community this year.  An “over-the-top” commitment to volunteerism for the good of the community has already been demonstrated.  Santa Rosa had record breaking levels of over 7,000 active citizen volunteers last year working on trail and stream preservation, public safety and emergency services, youth and senior services, art programs, special events, parks clean-up and building, fundraising and more.

A  cooperative effort among the merchants of 5th Street is underway to create The Share Fair on 5th Streetduring which itwill be closed to traffic and the Fair will take place between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm on Sunday, July 10.

share-exchangeWith a focus on kids, art and sharing, the Fair will bring the merchants, restaurants and businesses out into the streets along with artists, musicians, inventors, and mad, mad tinkerers.

Plans include live music, performing arts, sculpture exhibits, juried arts and craft vendors, food and beer. A "Share Zone" will be provided where participants can exchange items they no longer need for things that they can use. The "Repair Zone" will provide a place where participants can take items needing repair.

Unique educational activities are planned, including The Children's Museum of Sonoma County's Museum on the Go, Chops Teen Center art studio, and Don't Throw that Away ART/Trash  art project.

Neighborhood resources, exhibits and activities will abound. The new Sonoma County Urban Garden Share will help match homeowners with garden space to gardeners with experience.

The ShareExchange, a collaborative business and project incubation space, opened its doors on December 16, 2010 with the launch of the Made Local Marketplace, now featuring the work of more than 125 local makers.  Other projects at the ShareExchange include the Sonoma County TimeBank  and the Green Bough Health Cooperative. The ShareExchange is located at 531 5th Street in Downtown Santa Rosa, (between Mendocino & B Street).

Current sponsors of the Fair include: The ShareExchange, Made Local Marketplace and the City of Santa Rosa Arts District. russianriverrodeoDespite earlier fears that an outbreak of equine herpes might force the cancellation of the annual Russian River Rodeo this weekend, organizers now say the event will go on as planned with a full schedule of events. Mari Parmeter, board member and publicity person for the 44-year old rodeo explained that they are implementing precautions recommended by the state, but don’t foresee any complications to result.

Parmeter says the number of entrants has remained steady, and she is hoping ticket sales will do likewise. The biggest concern now is the weather, but the rodeo is set to go on as usual, rain or shine.

At the gate tickets are  $12 Adults, $7 Seniors, $5 Kids, and $30 Family Pack.

(Sonoma, CA)  Drilling preparations for two specially designed 500-foot deep groundwater monitoring wells in the Sonoma Valley basin commenced Tuesday, May 31, 2011 as a part of the Sonoma Valley Groundwater Management Program (SVGMP). The Sonoma Valley Groundwater Monitoring Wells Project (Project) is managed by the Sonoma County Water Agency (Water Agency) with oversight from the Basin Advisory Panel of the SVGMP. The Basin Advisory Panel is a collaborative group of Sonoma Valley stakeholders representing varied groundwater interests formed in 2006 to develop and adopt the SVGMP. The Project is slated for completion by mid-July.

“Data obtained from the groundwater monitoring wells will benefit ongoing and future components necessary for the successful implementation of the Sonoma Valley Groundwater Management Program,” said Water Agency Director Valerie Brown. “The data will also provide a technical basis to better manage the Sonoma Valley basin in the southern portion of Sonoma Valley to reduce risk of degradation to groundwater quality.”

The two well sites will each be constructed with depth-specific intervals to monitor multiple aquifer zones and are located along Watmaugh Road near Sonoma Creek and at 22333 Eighth Street East, north of the Sonoma Valley County Sanitation District’s wastewater treatment plant. These sites were specifically selected in the southern portion of Sonoma Valley due to concerns over saline water intrusion and declining groundwater levels. Each well will consist of several small wells targeted to monitor groundwater at specific depth intervals, thus allowing scientists to assess conditions vertically in addition to spatially. In addition to drilling and constructing the wells, the work will include subsurface investigations using sophisticated geophysical instruments to gather information regarding geology and groundwater.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) in 2008 awarded the Water Agency on behalf of the SVGMP a $250,000 Local Groundwater Assistance Act (AB 303) grant to fund the Project. Included in the cost of the Project and grant was the development of a groundwater recharge study recently completed by the Sonoma Ecology Center.

Data provided by the wells will be used to evaluate and monitor:

Groundwater levels and flow patterns in the region

Reported salinity intrusion in the region

       Groundwater quality

“These two wells will complement the successful voluntary groundwater-level monitoring program in the Sonoma Valley that currently includes over 130 wells - many from private landowners,” said Basin Advisory Panel Chairman and Valley of the Moon Water District Board Member Mark Bramfitt. “This is a crucial component of our effort to preserve and protect groundwater resources for generations to come.”

Water Agency Chief Engineer Jay Jasperse added, “Drilling and constructing the wells will enable Sonoma Valley stakeholders to obtain detailed geologic and hydrogeologic data of the area, and will provide long-term monitoring points to evaluate groundwater flow and quality.”

In addition to providing funding for the project, geologists from DWR will be onsite to assist in characterizing the geologic materials encountered during the drilling.
