All summer the food trucks, those mobile purveyors of delicious street food will travel to Regional Parks county-wide. Take a walk, hike, bike, do yoga, fish, relax, read, kayak, bird watch, or dog walk and grab a bite for dinner. You’ll feel great in two ways – each food truck is donating a portion of the sales to the Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation for children’s scholarships and your body and mind will feel great from the outdoor fun. Join us each month for a picnic in the park! Working in partnership with California State Parks and the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation & Open Space District, Sonoma County Regional Parks presents this year’s Parks Celebration Continues through June 21. From Earth Day to the summer solstice, the Parks Celebration brings 70 free and low-fee recreation, entertainment, leisure, education and service programs into the extraordinary parks and open spaces of Sonoma County. Join with the Southeast Greenway Campaign June 6 – 8 to ‘Imagine a Greenway to Spring Lake (and Annadel Park)’. Town Hall Meeting: Monday evening, June 6, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, at the Friedman Center, 4676 Mayette Avenue in Santa Rosa, facilitated by an SDAT team from the American Institute of Architects to gather community input and ideas; Focus Group Roundtables:  Monday afternoon, June 6, and Tuesday morning, June 7, with local stakeholders and interested citizens. (For topics, times and locations, visit www.SoutheastGreenway.org); Town Hall Report: Wednesday evening, June 8, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, at the Friedman Center, the AIA team will present recommendations for the planning, acquisition, design and stewardship of this community asset. American Red Cross Open Water Lifeguard Training 15 years old or older For the first time ever, Sonoma County Parks is offering open water lifeguard training.  This is the only open water training in Northern California offered in actual open water!  The course will be held at Spring Lake Swimming Lagoon. June 6th, 8th, 10th, 13th, 15th and 17th 8am-5pm.  The total course is 48 hours and all sessions are required to receive certification.  This course will meet any individual’s needs to become an Open Water Lifeguard. Course prerequisites (will be evaluated on the first day of class) 500yds continuous swim.  Retrieve a 10lb. object from over 7ft.of water and bring to the side of lagoon.  Note: All prerequisite swim testing activity is not timed but must remain continual. Swim goggles are highly recommended. 9-16 years olds interested in learning the skills needed for open water lifeguarding. The City of Santa Rosa is teaming up with the Sonoma CountyRegional Parks to offer this supervised Opportunity for the kids to learn lifeguard rescue skills. All camps will take place at the Spring lake Swimming lagoon June 6 - 10 (CPR/1st Aid focus) Mon-Fri 8:30am - 4:00pm June 13 - 17 (Environmental Ecology focus) Mon-Fri 8:30am - 4:00pm More Info & To Register. Lifeguard Training   Healdsburg Water Carnival Is Coming July 23, 2011 Sonoma County Regional Parks proudly presents the re-creation of the historic Healdsburg Water Carnival at Veterans Memorial Beach in Healdsburg. The day begins at 11am as the iconic White Swan float comes down the Russian River and passes under Memorial Bridge followed by 24 more floats.  The day will include live music, food vendors, old –time activities such as the ‘Whiskeroo’ and Period Bathing Suit Contest. There will be children’s activities, water games   and information and sales booths from the Carnival Sponsors.  Join the fun and be part of this great day.  Proceeds will benefit the installation of Veterans Memorial Beach Dam which has served as the community “swimming pool” on the Russian River for over 100 years in Healdsburg. Looking for volunteers to help bringing this exciting event to the masses.   More info. Foundation Matching Grant During the Membership Drive The Foundation has received a $20,000 matching grant.  Our anonymous donor will match any contribution we receive, Dollar for Dollar, up to $20,000. That means that if we receive, $20,00 in contributions, we will have a total of $40,000!  That’s twice as much money to help support our parks! Please help us achieve this goal by making a tax deductible contribution by donating to the Regional Parks Foundation today or by making your check payable to: Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation, 2300 County Center Dr., Ste 120A.  95403.     Central Sonoma Valley Trail Construction is complete on the first phase of the multi phased trail project located in the Springs area north of the City of Sonoma. In February 2011, the contract was awarded to GD Nielson Construction, Inc. to construct a trail through Larson Park (329 DeChene Avenue) that will serve as a future connector to Flowery Elementary School and Sonoma Charter School. The County has secured a trail easement crossing Sonoma Charter School property and is working with the Sonoma Valley Unified School District on obtaining a trail easement on Flowery Elementary School property. More trail segments will be completed as funding becomes available. The overall plan is to construct a trail from the City of Sonoma to the City of Santa Rosa along the Highway 12 corridor. SPECIAL NETWORKING PARTY TO FIND VOLUNTEER DRIVERS

San Rafael, CA (June 6, 2011) -- Whistlestop, the non-profit organization that provides vital services to Marin Countys older adults and individuals with disabilities, is pleased to announce the first Volunteer Driver/Rider Networking Party.

Have you got a few hours a week to drive an older adult to his or her appointments or grocery shopping? Are you an older adult in need of rides for your errands?

Whistlestop is hosting a Volunteer Driver/Rider Networking Party for anyone over 18 interested in helping older adults who need rides. Potential drivers have an opportunity to meet older adults who have not been able find a volunteer driver. As a volunteer driver, not only will you be helping older adults in your community, you will also receive reimbursement to cover your gas costs.

The Volunteer Driver Program Networking Event will be held on Thursday, June 23, from 4 to 5pm at Whistlestops Active Aging Center, 930 Tamalpais Ave, in San Rafael. For more information, contact the Volunteer Driver Program at 415-454-0969.

Since 1954 Whistlestop has been helping the Marin County community end loneliness and isolation through comprehensive and integrated services and activities for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Whistlestop is best known for providing rides for people with disabilities. Their fleet of over 50 specialized buses run seven days a week from early morning to late night, offering approximately 150,000 rides yearly throughout Marin County and beyond.

In addition, Whistlestops Active Aging Center, located in downtown San Rafael, provides continuing support for older adults through client-centered services and activities. These include computer classes, social activities, exercise classes, and many special programs for the Hispanic/Latino, Vietnamese, German, and Farsi-speaking communities. Invaluable services like citizenship assistance and ESL classes are offered as part of Whistlestops ongoing mission. Today the bustling Multicultural Department provides over 10,000 outreach contacts yearly in multiple languages.

Whistlestops Jackson Café, located at the Active Aging Center, serves delicious and affordable lunchtime meals, Monday through Friday to diners of all ages. The Café features daily specials, deli sandwiches, soups, desserts, and fresh salads. The Jackson Café offers a comfortable setting where older adults and their family and friends can eat well and stay socially active.
