Each January, the chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors presents a Report to the community that reflects on the year just past, and looks ahead into the year just beginning. For the past several years, KRCB has been pleased to broadcast this annual State of the County address, a tradition that continues with this online posting of the audio from the event, as introduced by News Director Bruce Robinson.

Earthquake researchers are turning to a new tool to help them quickly gauge the location and severity of newly occurring temblors—Twitter.

The USGS has developed a prototype application to search and capture Twitter feeds that make reference to earthquakes, according to Paul Earle, at the agency’s Earthquake Information Center in Colorado. But it’s still in the beta testing mode.

Longer term plans for making use of the quake-related tweets may include publishing maps showing where they originated, but Earle says that’s still well off into the future.

Still, as the graphic below shows, there is strong evidence already available to suggest that there will be plenty of content for the USGS program to work with as soon as it is fully operational.

Electrons move faster than earthquakes, giving new automated alert systems a few key seconds to warn outlying areas that some shaking is on the way.

This project is moving forward as quickly as possible, says Doug Given, but to be fully effective it requires the installation of many more sensors along the biggest known fault lines.

In setting all this up, priority has been given to the San Andreas Fault, one of the longest and most active in all of California.

The recession can be a triple threat to the financial security of seniors. Not only are their savings shrinking, family members may have crucial needs, while unscrupulous predatory sales operations that target elders are on the upswing.

The Elder Financial Protection Network has collaborated with NBC Bay Area to create the television documentary “Be Wise, Be Aware,” which was first broadcast on Jan 3, 2010. Much of that program’s power comes from its first-person case histories, but Jenefer Duane, the EFPN’s founder and CEO (below), says it isn’t easy to find such people who are willing to come forward and tell their stories.

Duane founded the Elder Financial Protection Network in 1999, but she’s been working on senior advocacy issues much longer. It’s a calling she traces back to her childhood, growing up in Corte Madera.
