The Icarus Project has become an outspoken advocacy organization for the idea of "radical mental health. Co-founder Jacks McNamara explains how they define that concept.

Radical mental health asks if being "different" is something that requires treatment, or can sometimes be recognized as just a different way of being. need not be seen or treated as a mental illness, argues Artist and poet Jacks McNamara argues that her bi-polar disorder should be seen as a "dangerous gift," something to cherish and to be wary of.

Now that the Icarus Project is eight years old, and well established across the country and beyond, McNamara says she is now turning more of her energies toward nurturing a new class of leaders and advocates to take the organization on to its next level.

The federal health care bill, passed earlier this year, will also boost the fiscal well-begin of community clinics in Sonoma County, as well as the patients they serve.

Mary Szecsey, Executive Director of the five West County Health Centers,  explains that the local clinics, and many of their counterparts across the county, have helped pioneer and refine the concept known as a “medical home” for patients.

This approach, developed in considerable part out of necessity, has proven to be both efficacious and cost-effective, Szecsey adds, which is why it is being more widely adopted.

Horror movies and popular musicals notwithstanding, carnivorous plants do not eat people, nor do they grow to tower over us. Without that far-fetched scare factor, they are strangely beautiful…and decidedly weird.

Peter D’Amato was just a boy when he first sent for a mail-order Venus Flytrap. It didn’t last long, but his interest in these strange plants did, especially after he was introduced to some that were growing in the wild not far from his home.

D’Amato’s California Carnivores nurserypropagates and breeds many of the plants they display and sell, such as sundews and pitcher plants. They need to be kept wet, he explains, but they don’t need to be fed.

Aside from the loss of habitat that threatens them, carnivorous plants are naturally long-lived.

Many of D'Amato's specimens are currently on display in San Francisco, at the exhibit called Chomp 2 at the Conservatory of Flowers.

Medical marijuana has grown from an “only in California” curiosity into an expanding realm of business opportunities—which some are now calling the Cannabis Industry. Among them is an entrepreneur who sees a niche in training workers for that budding industry.

The Cannabis Training University program will be offered at the Holiday Inn Express  in Santa Rosa July 24-25 (other summer sessions are scheduled in San Jose and Santa Cruz).  Jeffery Zorn outlines the curriculum.

 Zorn is himself a graduate of Oaksterdam University, the Oakland-based school that was established to address many of the same needs and concerns as the Cannabis Training University. But as the founder, owner, CEO and promoter for CTU, Zorn sees comparative benefits in his program.

Cannabis activist and advocate Ed Rosenthal   is among the instructors at the Cannabis Training University, but will not be among the faculty for the Santa Rosa workshop.
