The Geneva Conventions

The Geneva Conventions are not a conference, but an international treaty signed by every established nation in the world. And there are four of them.

Miller talks about the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that applied the Geneva Conventions to the U.S. detention facility at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

The local Red Cross offers a free class to educate the public about the Geneva Conventions four times a year. Upcoming classes will be held September 20, and November 15, 9 to1 each day . For further information call (707) 577-7600, or to register online, click here .

The Society for Professional Journalists has prepared an online  reference guide on the Geneva Conventions, including the full text, which can be accessed here.

Protesting Torture

The United States has abdicated its standing as a nation that does not condone or practice torture, but Father Louis Vitale is working to reinstate that stance.

Father Vitale will speak in Santa Rosa on Sunday, September 7, at 7:00 pm. at the  Christ Church United Methodist, 1717  Yulupa, Santa Rosa. For further information about the event, call 707-575-8902. A $10 donation is suggested, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds. To learn more about the "No to Torture, Yes to Peace" campaign, click here .The event is co-sponsored by the Sonoma Couty Network of Spiritual Progressives, the Peace and Justice Center of Sonoma County , and numerous other local groups involved in peace and social justice issues.

The Wall That Heals

A traveling half-scale replica of the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial from

Washington D.C. is visiting Santa Rosa for a few days,

eliciting memories, mourning and emotion.

 

"The Wall That Heals" is a project of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.


The United Veterans Council of Sonoma County took the lead inbringing the wall to Santa Rosa.

Women's Equality Day

When the 19th amendment was adopted 88 years ago, giving American women the right to vote, rural Californians played a pivotal role in the outcome.
