Anonymous: 19th And 20th Century Photographs And Quilts By Unknown Artists From The Collection Of Robert Flynn Johnson ( 12:00 - noon )

A new exhibit, Anonymous: 19th and 20th Century Photographs and Quilts by Unknown Artists from the Collection of Robert Flynn Johnson, will run August 5 through September 18 at Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville Street, Petaluma. Anonymous photography has a magical and mysterious quality. The nineteenth and twentieth century images assembled here by collector and curator Robert Flynn Johnson are by turn poignant, humorous, erotic, and disturbing. Their subject is the human condition. Although the artists are unknown, the photographs could be made by anyone who has ever used a camera.

Johnson’s search for vernacular photographs led him to discover another form of memory-gathering and he began collecting hand-made quilts. He found the same mystery and poignant humanity in quilts, pieced together from family clothing and fabrics.

Recently retired as curator in charge of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, a position he held since 1975, Robert Flynn Johnson is the author of numerous books and critical essays. Two recent books will be on sale at the Petaluma Art Center during the exhibition:  Anonymous: Enigmatic Images from Unknown Photographers and The Face in the Lens: Anonymous Photography.

The exhibition includes 12 quilts and numerous photographic images from Johnson’s second book, The Face in the Lens. Selected photographs from the author’s collection will be offered for sale. Johnson will sign both books at the August 14 panel discussion with San Francisco gallery owners and fellow collectors, Stephen Wirtz and Robert Tat.

Wretch Like Me ( 8:00 pm )

The award winning solo show Wretch Like Me will be presented at three North Bay locations August 5 through October 19 in Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.

The show, created by actor, journalist and National Endowment for the Arts-honored theater critic David Templeton explores a wild ride through a 1970’s Southern California landscape of spaced-out believers, tongues-spouting surfers, and radical evangelical puppeteers. The plot-driven storytelling also includes cleverly conjured descriptions of an acid-dropping minister named Reverend Dude, an affably sinister alien puppet and a beautiful believer.

Due Zighi Baci (Two Gypsy Kisses) presents Panini on a Croissant – a concert of music from the boulevards of Paris and Rome at Aqus Café  (189 H Street) in Petaluma, 7 p.m. on September 16.

Due Zighi Baci have performed in a variety of San Francisco Bay Area venues. Most recently they appeared at the North Bay Italian Cultural Center in Santa Rosa and Café Trieste in San Francisco’s North Beach.

Sonido Pirata ( 11:00 am - 5:00 pm )

Sonido Pirata is an exhibition exploring sound, memory, and cultural history. In Latin America it is common for popular music to be pirated and sold by street vendors as commercial merchandise. The artists in this exhibition take their cue from this phenomenon of sonido pirata (literally, "pirated sound"), making use of appropriated sounds and images and utilizing approaches to art-making that mimic and reflect black market economies. Curated by Julio Cesar Morales. Featured artists: Facundo Argañaraz, Nao Bustamante, Juan Capistran, Sofia Cordova, Ana Teresa Fernandez, Josh Kun, Juan Luna-Avin, Eamon Ore-Giron, Shizu Saldamando, Torolab, Cristina Victor.  Exhibition takes place at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, 551 Broadway, just off the Sonoma Town Plaza.

"The Aesthetics Of Allá": A Sonidero Lecture ( 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm )

In Spanish, allá is neither the here (aqua) nor there (allí) that we see. Allá is an "over there" that is not necessarily visible, a space we know is there but is not yet occupied or realized.
