Weekdays at 9 am

A daily five-minute interview about events, issues, activities and people in and around Sonoma County. Hosted by Roland Jacopetti at 9:00am Monday through Friday on KRCB-FM 91.1/90.9.
June 1-10 - Healdsburg, CA.
The Healdsburg Jazz Festival will take the wine country by storm for the 14th consecutive year with a power-packed roster of jazz “Roy-alty” -- that's Roy as in Haynes, the legendary drummer and NEA Jazz Master -- and a bevy of veterans and jazz rising stars. The festival is proud to present for the first time, NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan, a unique vocal force in the music for over half a century. Healdsburg, which has never compromised its vision of presenting authentic jazz greats, continues this June with a lineup that includes another Jazz Master -- the peerless guitarist Kenny Burrell -- red-hot pianist Vijay Iyer and his trio that's the toast of New York; local jazz mover and shaker Adam Theis' Shotgun Wedding; the dazzling pianist Michele Rosewoman with trombone legend Julian Priester sitting in as special guest; suave, bluesy pianist/singer Freddy Cole; timbales grandmaster Orestes Vilato's brand-new trans-Latin group Azesu, featuring the beguiling Venezuelan singer Maria Marquez; a Dixieland superband led by Mal Sharpe; a Jazz Night at the Movies courtesy of Mark Cantor and his mile-deep cache of rare jazz footage; Northern California soul-jazz guitarist extraordinaire Calvin Keys; and lots more.
As usual, the festival matches the jazz with the area's most beautiful settings, such as Rodney Strong Vineyards, Barndiva restaurant, the Cousteaux Bakery, the town plaza and of course the Raven Performing Arts Theater.
With help from the very prestigious ,000 NEA Jazz Master's Live grant to present Mr. Haynes and Ms. Jordan, the Festival will also be offering a couple of special programs. A Roy-al Family Panel Discussion featuring headliner Roy Haynes and his two sons, cornetist Graham and drummer Craig and other participants, will air out the limitless legacy of a drummer who has played with practically every significant figure in jazz history, from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to John Coltrane to Chick Corea. A Vocal Master Class led by the divine Ms. Jordan, open to singers of all levels, will reveal secrets she has stored since singing with Charlie Parker as a teenager.
Other treats abound at the fest. Try the late-night jams at the Healdsburg Hotel featuring Lorca Hart's juicy trio, or a wine tasting at Seasons of the Vineyard graced by the superlative Benny Barth Trio.
Come to the festival and soak in the magic that has made Healdsburg an annual mecca for jazz pilgrims who crave the real deal.

May 11th - 27th - Studio Theatre
For more than half a century the name Florence Foster Jenkins has been guaranteed to produce explosions of derisive laughter. Not unreasonably so, as this wealthy society eccentric suffered under the delusion that she was a great coloratura soprano when she was in fact incapable of producing two consecutive notes in tune. Nevertheless, her annual recitals in the ballroom of the Ritz Carlton hotel brought her extraordinary fame. As news of her terrible singing spread, so did her celebrity. Her growing mob of fans packed her recitals, stuffing handkerchiefs in their mouths to stifle their laughter which Mrs. Jenkins blissfully mistook for cheers. The climax of her career was a single concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944. Famously, it sold out in two hours. SOUVENIR, by turn hilarious and poignant, tells her story through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon. Faced with her boundless certainty, Cosme comes to revise his attitude, not only towards her singing but to the very meaning of music itself. As the play ends the audience enters her world completely, finding there the beauty she'd heard in her head all along. SOUVENIR is a musical odd-couple for the ages.

May 12th, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Friedman Center, Santa Rosa
The unemployment rate in Sonoma County is 9.5%. More than 14 percent of Sonoma County residents are without health insurance. More than 13 percent of Sonoma County residents are living in poverty. That's slightly more than one in eight people who call our county home.
What is being done, and what should be done, in Sonoma County to create jobs and reduce unemployment? Do you agree with the often-cited statement that “The private sector creates wealth and the public sector consumes it”? Do social values correlate with economic values? Does providing a Living Wage hurt or help the economy?
These questions and others will be discussed and debated by a panel of Sonoma County residents with differing viewpoints, from very conservative to very progressive and points between, at the inaugural Sonoma Counterpoints.
Panelists for the inaugural Sonoma CounterPoints will be:
Jack Atkins, President of the Sonoma County Taxpayers’ Association and founder of Landmark Properties & Mortgage Co.
Dan Hamburg, former congressman and two time Mendocino County Supervisor. Hamburg has worked for environmental and social justice, public financing of political campaigns, and single-payer health care.
Lisa Maldonado, Executive Director of the North Bay Labor Council, AFL-CIO. She has previously worked as a Political Director for the San Mateo County Labor Council and Field Director at the ACLU of Northern California. She is an attorney and has a JD from the University of San Francisco Law School.
Richard L. Sutter, Ph.D., former Director of International Programs for the California State University System, an academic administrator and Lecturer in Global Studies at Sonoma State University, and a retired U.S. Army officer. Presently, Sutter is a member of the Sonoma County Republican Central Committee representing the First Supervisorial District.
The forum will be moderated by Pamela Torliatt, former Mayor of the City of Petaluma and 14-year Petaluma City Councilmember.
Special guest speaker Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey will give an opening statement.
The event will be hosted by the Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights at 1 p.m. May 12th at the Friedman Center, 4676 Mayette Avenue, Santa Rosa.

I just listened to Roland discussing an interesting event at the Quicksilver Mining Company, but I missed some details. So I clicked on the Community Calendar and looked at the date he mentioned (9/13)...and found nothing. Seems to me someone should update the calendar every time Roland, Bruce Robinson or anyone else at the station records a piece about something happening in the community KRCB is otherwise connecting so well...thanks!
