"Only children and whores wear red shoes"
--heard on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
The heart of Red Shoes Rodeo is passion. Intensity. Music that is close to the bone, not overproduced, heartfelt rather than slick (Cheap Trick not withstanding). All killa, no filla. A flourish of silliness doesn't hurt, but not if it's forced. RSR loves emotion, hates sentimentality. Happiness is a Warm Gun, not All You Need Is Love. Mainstream is okay if it's good mainstream. Led Zeppelin rocks, so shut up. Keith Richards is my favorite of those guys. Bryan Ferry is God. Courtney Love is my evil twin, though even I think she may have gone too far lately. I still miss Kurt Cobain. Joey Ramone is the father of my children. Dean Martin is my real father. I'd rather swallow my own head than play Steely Dan. My dirty little secret is that I don't like Elvis Costello's newer stuff.
Some current faves: Cadillaca; Bertha Tillman; Carla Bozulich; Pere Ubu; Mink DeVille; Ramones; Sleater Kinney; The Bangs; Connie Francis; Ann Magnuson; Le Tigre; The Picketts; Freakwater; Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Charlie Rich; Julee Cruise; Morphine; Lee Dorsey; Righteous Brothers.
My radio mentor is Richard Gossett.
Now, thanks to KRCB, I am my own Richard Gossett.

Since the 70s, I've found musical inspiration in Greil Marcus's column Real Life Rock. Currently, it is published in City Pages in Minneapolis. Enter 'Greil Marcus' in the search option and you will get you a list of all back columns.
