THE SAINT PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Live Tonight: The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra's Jazz Band Composer, 5 p.m. ET
When soprano Dawn Upshaw asked Maria Schneider to compose a piece for her to sing with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Schneider told her that was crazy. Schneider is one of the most respected composers in jazz, the leader of her own New York-based big band for almost two decades and the recipient of two Grammys. But she had compelling reasons to deny Upshaw's request.

"Initially I was just terrified," Schneider said, "because I've never written anything for classical orchestra at that point. I'd never written for classical soprano. I was just dumbfounded. The other part that was scary was writing for words."

"I was just in love with Maria's music," Upshaw said. "She's an extraordinary human being. Her joy, her warmth — you hear all those things in her music. I loved being surrounded by her music when I listened to it. I felt better."

FM co-hosts garner a Bohemian “Best”
pillow_stormSingled out for appreciation in the North Bay Bohemian’s annual “Best of” issue last month were the co-hosts of one of KRCB-FM’s home-grown late night music programs. And we quote: “Best Way to Rock with the Neighbors.” Pillow Storm, the weekly radio show on KRCB-FM hosted by Josh Staples and Josh Drake, is the best thing to happen to Wednesday nights since Adult Skate. Drake and Staples feature blocks of music, a local musical guest and snarky and silly commentary. Listeners might get a 10-minute-long treatise from Staples on the ’90s Petaluma crust-punk band Lung-butter or possibly an extended rant from Drake about how much he hates hiking and loathes AC/DC. Ah, public radio. The show began in 2010, an offspring of the show called Left of the Dial. Staples says it’s the only indie—and alternative-rock show on the station, and though it showcases music from all over, the Joshes shine the spotlight squarely on local bands, which means a chance to hear local music that might push your cool meter up a few notches. Pillow Storm airs Wednesdays, 10 pm - midnight.

David Templeton Sky

Cue the music. Hit the lights. With KRCB's early-morning news segment, Second Row Center.

Sonoma County theater critic David Templeton (North Bay Bohemian, Theatre Bay Area Magazine) yanks open the curtain on the best (and worst) of Bay Area theater, giving theater-loving listeners the upbeat lowdown on which plays are happening where, what they're all about and whether they're worth the trip. With unexpected insights, snappy observations, and pithy contextual analysis (yep, sometimes it's even educational!), David's weekly commentary will bring the Bay Area stages right into your car, workplace or living room.

Cue applause.
