The Big Read Sonoma County 2008
The
Big Read is back. KRCB and its partners have once again received
funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to hold a countywide
reading program this fall.
On September 20 - October 31, 2008, adults and teens will be invited to join
together to read Harper Lee’s classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, about
coming of age and confronting racism in the South in the middle of the
20th Century. This is the second year for The Big Read Sonoma County,
which grew out of Sonoma County Reads, a countywide reading program for
almost a decade.
The
Big Read Sonoma County is led by KRCB Public Broadcasting, in
partnership with the Sonoma County Library, Sonoma County Public
Library Foundation, the Arts Council of Sonoma County, Sonoma County
Book Festival, Sonoma State University, Santa Rosa Junior College and
Copperfield’s Books.
The
Big Read Sonoma County and KRCB are taking this opportunity to
encourage all members of the community to participate and organize
activities related to the Big Read this fall. All activities will be
listed on the Big Read Sonoma County calendar of events, which will be
distributed throughout the county, and on the Big Read Sonoma County
and KRCB websites. The most creative, interesting projects will be
featured on KRCB’s airwaves. In addition, a limited number of
mini-grants of between $50 and $500 will be available.
More information about the Big Read is available at The Big Read Sonoma County website or by contacting Robin Metalitz.
Unnatural Causes
KRCB-TV will be rebroadcasting Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? starting on September 23rd at 9 pm.
This
past April, KRCB partnered with the Sonoma County Department of Health
to present Unnatural Causes. This four-part series highlights the
socioeconomic factors that play a role in causing poorer health.
KRCB and the Department of Health want to
take this opportunity to start a dialogue in our community about the
influence that poverty and racism might play in making the people who
live here sicker, and what we can do to change that. This past spring, we went to a
few local leaders who work on health and poverty issues to ask them
what they felt the major challenges were facing our community. We also
asked some people on the street about their opinions of the
intersection of poverty and health. We will be broadcasting an updated version of this piece on September 23rd at 10 pm.
You've come this far - we invite you take another step: get involved in the local discussion.
Here are a few ways:
Get
involved with some of the organizations working locally on health care
access, reducing or equalizing the effects of poverty, or stopping
racism:
Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County
Sonoma County Living Wage Coalition
Redwood Empire Food Bank
Sonoma County Health Access Coalition
Sonoma County Office of Education
Sonoma County Department of Public Health
Unnatural Causes web site (for video clips, more information, interactive activities and more)
MacArthur Foundation Study: Reaching for a Healthier Life
Health statistics in Sonoma County
from the Sonoma County Department of Public Health
KRCB
will continue to partner with these organizations to move the dialogue
forward on ways to improve health through improving socioeconomic
status in our community. Stay tuned to this space for more.
Past Successes
The Best Seat in the House Festival
Working with the diverse community of wheelchair users right here in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the original independent living movement began only 3 decades ago, KRCB Public Broadcasting proudly presented The Best Seat in the House Festival in Spring 2008. This first-ever festival included a television special broadcast of the award winning documentary film “Rolling,” a neighborhood film series in the North Bay and East Bay, and a series of local stories highlighting several Bay Area individuals who use wheelchairs. For more information see the Best Seat Festival website.
Fall 2007: The Big Read Sonoma County: Fahrenheit 451
KRCB and the Big Read Sonoma County would like to thank everyone who participated in 2007, featuring Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Almost 80,000 people participated in more than 56 events around the County. The events received coverage in many local papers, minireadings were aired more than 300 times, and thousands of reader’s guides were distributed. Thousands of people read the book, some of them for the first time!
Thanks to your efforts, discussions were stimulated, ideas were debated, reading was encouraged, and we came together as a community to celebrate this important novel.
