In celebration of its 30th Anniversary Season, Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa will present a free community concert by the United States Coast Guard Band on Sunday, July 17 at 7 p.m. The concert will feature the nation’s pre-eminent military band performing at the North Bay’s premier Arts Center. The July 17th performance will kick off the Center’s 30th season featuring more than 100 world-class performances and nationally-recognized education programs for children. Since its inception in 1981, the non-profit Arts Center has presented 3,000 performances, served 12 million visitors, and provided education programs to 600,000 children.
“This concert is our gift to the people of our community, without whom we would not be here today,” says the Center’s executive director, Rick Nowlin. “A group of local residents founded the Center three decades ago and the Center continues to be community owned and operated today. We’re grateful for this support and thrilled to celebrate 30 years together—commencing July 17th!”
The Coast Guard Band presents a rich tapestry of American music. Aaron Copland’s aria “The Promise of Living” from the opera “The Tender Land” is presented in an arrangement for wind ensemble. Other classical pieces include Alfred Reed’s “Armenian Dances,” Morton Gould’s “Santa Fe Saga,” and Frank Ticheli’s “Wild Nights.” Marches by John Philip Sousa, including “George Washington Bicentennial” and “Hands Across the Sea,” highlight the program. Soprano soloist Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget sings Samuel Augustus Ward’s poignant “America, the Beautiful.” Trumpet soloists Chief Musician Gino Villarreal and MU1 Thomas Brown perform George Bizet’s robust “Carmen Fantasia.”
The 55-member ensemble of the United States Coast Guard performs concert tours around the nation and has also played in the former Soviet Union, Canada, and England. In 2008, the Coast Guard Band became the first premier American military band to perform a concert tour of Japan. In addition, the US Coast Guard Brass Quintet and Saxophone Quartet performed throughout Taiwan in 2010 to great acclaim.
This performance is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. A maximum of four tickets per person are available at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts box office. Wells Fargo Center for the Arts is located at 50 Mark West Springs Road in Santa Rosa. For more information, visit their website or call (707) 546-3600.
